2026Autumn in Prague: The Best Locations for Fall Photoshoots
For about four weeks every October, Prague looks like it was designed for a photographer. The lindens along the river turn honey-yellow, the maples in the Botanical Garden go crimson, and the low sun sets the old town glowing by five in the afternoon. This is the season I would pick for almost any session: solo, couple or family.
Autumn in Prague, week by week
Colour arrives from the river outwards and from the top of the hills down, so there is usually somewhere at its best from late September into November. Dates move by a week or so with the weather; a dry, sunny October is the best case, a windy one strips the trees early.
| When | What you see | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Late September | First yellow in the riverside lindens, gardens still green, evenings still warm. | Light dresses, couples, solo |
| 1–14 October | Colour spreading through Letná, Petřín and Kampa. Sunset moves from about 18:40 to 18:15. | Every type of session |
| 15–25 October | The peak. Maples in the Botanical Garden turn red, Letná’s plane-tree avenue goes gold, leaves still on the trees. | The best fortnight of the year |
| 26–31 October | Carpets of leaves on the paths. Clocks go back on the last Sunday of October, so golden hour moves to about 16:00. | Families: golden hour before dinner |
| 1–10 November | Fewer leaves on the trees, many on the ground, fog on the river most mornings. | Moody couple and solo portraits |
| Mid November | Mostly bare branches; the Christmas markets open at the end of the month. | See the winter guide |

Autumn photoshoot ideas
Autumn gives every kind of session its own version. These are the ideas I suggest most often, with frames from real sessions.
Solo
Red maples in the Botanical Garden
The Japanese garden in Troja is the most colourful place in the city for about three weeks, and almost nobody photographs there. Maples in red and orange, stone paths half hidden under leaves, and a slope of vineyards behind. It suits a solo portrait perfectly: one person, one strong colour, no crowds. There is an entrance ticket, and the garden is a short bus ride from the centre.

Couple
Mist on the river and swans on the bank
On October mornings the Vltava often carries a layer of mist until about nine. A sunrise walk from Kampa along the water gives soft, quiet frames with the Charles Bridge half dissolved behind you, and the swans below the bridge are always ready to join in. Later in the day, the old town’s arcades and the Letná avenue give warmer, golden light.

Family
Throwing leaves in the park
With children, autumn does the directing for me. Give them a pile of leaves and a minute later everyone is laughing, which is exactly the photo parents want. Letná and Stromovka have the widest lawns under old trees, and after the clocks change the golden hour falls conveniently before dinner time, so nobody is tired.

Riegrovy sady in Vinohrady deserves a mention too: the park drops downhill towards a full view of Prague Castle, and in autumn the trees framing it turn yellow and rust. For exact light on your date, see the October and November sunrise and sunset times.

What to wear in autumn
Warm, earthy colours work with the season rather than against it: camel, rust, burgundy, olive, cream and denim. One strong colour, such as a red coat or a mustard scarf, looks wonderful against yellow leaves. Avoid neon, large logos and anything that fights the background. Mornings can be cold, so bring a layer you are happy to be photographed in, and shoes you can walk on wet leaves and cobblestones with. My season-by-season wardrobe guide has more.

Questions about autumn sessions
When exactly is peak autumn colour in Prague?
In a typical year colour starts around 5–10 October, peaks between about 15 and 30 October, and lasts into early November if the wind stays calm. I check the parks every few days and tell you where the colour is best the week before your session.
What if it rains?
Light rain often makes the best autumn photos, with deeper colours and reflections on the cobblestones. If it pours, we move the session to another time or day at no cost.
What time of day is best in autumn?
Sunrise for empty streets and river mist, or the last hour before sunset for warm light. In October that means meeting around 7:00 or around 17:00; after the clocks change in late October, golden hour moves to about 15:30–16:30.
Is autumn a busy time to book?
October weekends fill up first, often by August. Weekdays and early November are easier. If your dates are fixed, book as soon as you know them.
Can we combine autumn colours with the landmarks?
Yes. Most routes start at the Charles Bridge or Old Town Square at sunrise and end in a park or garden when the light warms up, so you get both the icons and the colour.
