How to Elope in Prague: A Complete Guide for Couples

Some of the most moving weddings I photograph have a guest list of exactly two. Prague is one of Europe’s great elopement cities — walkable, romantic, affordable compared with Paris or Venice, and photogenic from every angle. If you’re dreaming about skipping the big wedding and starting your marriage with an adventure, here is how eloping in Prague actually works.

The legal part, briefly

Foreign couples can legally marry in the Czech Republic, but paperwork takes time — typically documents must be prepared several weeks ahead, sometimes with apostilles and certified translations. Many couples take a simpler path: handle the legal signing at home, then hold a symbolic ceremony in Prague. A symbolic ceremony needs no paperwork at all, can happen anywhere we can stand, and looks identical in photographs. Most of my eloping couples choose this route.

Where to say your vows

  • Vrtba Garden’s upper terrace — baroque, intimate, castle views (April–October).
  • Vyšehrad ramparts at sunset — sweeping river views and hardly any tourists.
  • Charles Bridge at sunrise — the icon, empty at dawn; vows among the statues.
  • Divoká Šárka or Průhonice Park — for couples who want nature and total seclusion.
  • A rooftop terrace — several Old Town venues host micro-ceremonies with skyline views.

A sample elopement day

Here’s a flow that has worked beautifully many times: getting ready photos at your hotel in the morning; a first look on a quiet Kampa riverbank; vows and rings on the Vyšehrad walls; a long unhurried portrait walk through Lesser Town as the light turns gold; and finally dinner for two somewhere candlelit. No timeline stress, no seating chart — just the two of you and a city that treats every couple like the only one in it.

Best months to elope here

May, June and September are the safest bets — long evenings, mild weather, gardens open. December has its own magic if you want Christmas markets glowing behind your vows. August works well with a sunrise or golden-hour plan to dodge heat and crowds.

What it costs

An elopement in Prague — photography, flowers, hair and makeup, a celebrant if you wish, dinner — typically comes to a fraction of an average wedding budget. My photography packages scale from a one-hour vow session to a full elopement day, and I’m glad to recommend trusted local vendors for the rest.

Questions about logistics? The FAQ covers the practical side, or just write to me — planning elopements is genuinely one of the best parts of this job.
