Kampa Island & Čertovka Canal: Prague’s Most Romantic Photo Spots

prague small venice river kampa island

Locals call it “Prague’s Venice,” which undersells it — Venice doesn’t have a castle floating above its canal. Kampa Island and the Čertovka millstream that separates it from Lesser Town pack more romance per square meter than anywhere else in the city, and the whole area is flat, calm and five minutes from the Charles Bridge. Here’s how I use it in sessions.

The Čertovka waterwheel

The old wooden mill wheel still turns slowly in the canal, framed by willows and crooked houses whose foundations stand in the water. The little bridge above it — often decorated with love locks — is one of my most-requested backdrops for couples. Come early: the viewpoint is tiny and popular by mid-morning.

Under the Charles Bridge

Kampa’s northern tip slides directly beneath the bridge’s stone arches. From the grass you photograph the bridge from below — a perspective most visitors never see — with swans drifting through the frame and the Old Town towers across the water. At golden hour the arches glow amber; at blue hour the lamps double themselves in the river.

The park and the riverside lawn

Kampa Park itself is a long riverside lawn dotted with sculptures and poplars — space for families to run, couples to picnic, and photographers to use the widest view of the National Theatre gleaming gold across the Vltava. Strollers and grandparents manage the flat paths easily, which makes Kampa my first suggestion for three-generation family sessions.

Details worth hunting

  • The narrowest houses on Hroznová street, painted like candy.
  • The John Lennon Wall, two minutes away, for a splash of color and rebellion.
  • Velkopřevorské Square’s baroque palaces and chestnut shade.
  • Café tables by the canal for “caught mid-conversation” frames.

When to come

Kampa works in every season: spring blossoms hang over the canal, summer evenings glow long, autumn turns the poplars yellow, and after snowfall the waterwheel scene becomes a Bruegel painting. For the emptiest frames, weekday mornings before 9:00 are gold.

Kampa anchors several of my favorite photography routes — pair it with the Charles Bridge at sunrise or a Lesser Town wander. Session details and prices here.
