A Taiwanese Couple’s Pre-Wedding Story in Prague
How an ancient European city became the perfect setting for a love story that began on the other side of the world.
As a photographer, being trusted to preserve the most tender and romantic chapters of someone’s life is a privilege I never take for granted. But there are certain shoots that linger — sessions where the light, the location, and the people align so perfectly that the camera almost becomes unnecessary. The pre-wedding session I photographed for a wonderful couple from Taiwan, here in the heart of Prague, was precisely one of those rare mornings.
This wasn’t simply a job. It was being invited into a love story — witnessing two people, half a world from home, choose this ancient, beautiful city as the backdrop for the first chapter of their married life.
“Every corner of Prague tells a story. My task was simply to find which corners best told theirs.”
Planning the Shoot: From Taipei to Prague
Before any shoot, I spend real time understanding what a couple hopes to feel when they look back at their photographs — not just what they want to see, but the atmosphere they want to remember. When I first connected with this couple, their vision was clear and genuinely moving: they wanted images that felt both spontaneous and considered, romantic without being theatrical, and above all, true to who they are together.
They were searching for a collection that held both the grand gestures and the quiet glances — a portfolio that would capture Prague’s singular beauty while keeping them, unmistakably, at its center.
Selecting locations for this shoot meant thinking beyond the obvious. Prague’s famous landmarks — Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, the Old Town Square — are iconic for good reason, and we visited each of them. But the city rewards those who wander. We sought out quieter corners: a narrow lane in Malá Strana where the plaster walls were painted in peeling gold, a garden overlooking the river where almost no tourists find their way in spring. Each location was chosen not for its postcard familiarity, but for the specific quality of light and feeling it would lend to their images.
Wardrobe: Dressing for a City and a Love Story
Wardrobe in photography is never simply an aesthetic choice — it shapes the entire emotional register of the images. This couple understood that instinctively. The bride wore a floor-length gown with delicate lace detailing, its ivory tone catching the morning light beautifully against Prague’s warm stone facades. The groom was sharp and understated in a well-cut black suit with a black tie — a combination that, against the city’s layered textures, felt timeless rather than formal.
Their choices weren’t accidental. Both outfits had been selected specifically with Prague’s palette in mind — the aged terracotta rooftops, the weathered Gothic stone, the soft green of riverside willows — and the harmony was evident in every frame.
The Shoot: Chasing Light Through the City’s Streets
We began before the city woke up. Prague in the early morning — when the cobblestones are still damp and the light is pale gold and directional — is a different place from the Prague of midday tourists. That quality of light, impossibly soft and long-shadowed, is worth every early alarm.
Moving through the city’s streets, we paused wherever something caught — a doorway that framed them perfectly, a reflection in a puddle, a stretch of bridge railing where the light fell at exactly the right angle. In between the composed, intentional frames, I stayed back and let them simply be together. Those candid moments — a shared laugh, a whispered word, the instinctive way they lean into one another — are often the images that matter most years later.
What struck me throughout the day was the ease between them. There is a particular kind of couple who make a photographer’s job feel almost effortless — not because they are “naturals” in front of a camera, but because their connection is so genuine that the camera simply records what is already there. This couple was exactly that. Every image, whether carefully composed or caught in passing, held the same quality: the quiet, certain presence of two people who are entirely at home with one another.
“The best photographs from any session are rarely the most elaborate ones. They are the frames where someone forgot, just for a moment, that I was there.”
Why Prague, and Why Spring
Couples travel from across the world to photograph in Prague — and having worked in this city through every season, I understand why. The architecture is extraordinary, yes, but it is the city’s atmosphere that is irreplaceable: the sense of accumulated history in its stones, the way light behaves differently here than almost anywhere else in Europe, the surprising intimacy of its streets even in a city of well over a million people.
Spring amplifies all of this. The cherry trees along the riverbanks are in bloom. The days are long enough to allow for evening sessions in warm, low light. The city feels renewed — and that feeling translates directly into photographs that carry a particular sense of aliveness and optimism.
For couples considering a pre-wedding session abroad, Prague is among the finest choices available. And shooting before the main wedding day — without the time pressures, the guests, the schedule — allows for a depth of storytelling that the wedding day itself rarely permits.
A Note to Couples Planning a Prague Pre-Wedding Session
If you are considering Prague for your own engagement or pre-wedding photography, I am happy to help you plan a session that is shaped around who you are — not a standard route, but something considered and personal. Every couple brings their own story; the city has enough in it to tell all of them differently.
