2026Vrtba Garden Photoshoot: Prague’s Hidden Baroque Gem
Ask a hundred tourists about Vrtba Garden and ninety-nine will walk straight past its door on Karmelitská street. That anonymity is exactly what makes it one of my favorite places to photograph in Prague. Behind that door: three terraces of baroque sculpture, curling staircases and a top-level view over the rooftops to Prague Castle.
Why photographers love it
Vrtba is small — you can cross it in two minutes — but it is dense with backdrops. Frescoed walls, stone vases, symmetrical hedges, a shell-encrusted grotto and those sculpted staircases that were made for a flowing dress. Because it’s terraced, every level gives a different angle of the same golden city view, so a one-hour session feels like visiting four locations.

The crowd advantage
Entry costs a few euros, and that modest ticket keeps the garden remarkably quiet. On weekday mornings you may share all three terraces with five other people. Compare that with the Charles Bridge at the same hour and you’ll understand why couples who value privacy end up here.

Best timing
- Season: open April to October — it closes for winter, so plan accordingly.
- Morning (right at opening): soft light, emptiest terraces.
- Late afternoon: the sun drops behind Petřín and the whole garden glows warm.
- May–June: the flower beds peak and the vines on the walls turn lush green.
Then its also possible to walk around he Vltava river by the Charles Bridge from Vrtba Garden (around 5-10 minutes)
What kind of sessions work here
Elegant couple and engagement sessions are the natural fit — the baroque setting rewards a dressed-up look. It’s also a superb proposal spot: the upper terrace is small enough that a “random tourist photographer” (me) never looks out of place. For families with young children the terrCaces and stairs need supervision, but the garden’s smallness actually helps keep everyone in frame.
Combining it with a route
Vrtba sits at the foot of Lesser Town, which means we can start on its terraces and then wander: Kampa Island is eight minutes downhill, the Charles Bridge ten. A 90-minute session covers garden, riverside and bridge without ever feeling rushed.
Vrtba’s opening season is short and its best mornings book out — check session prices and the FAQ, and let’s reserve one while the garden is green.
